You don’t take it inside. You don’t take it to a place where it is protected from rain so that it is exposed to water.

If metal is left out in the rain, it will rust.

I don’t think there is one single word you can replace ‘leave’ with but that you would have to reword the whole sentence:

When you expose metal to the rain, it will rust.
