Job security for life

Businesses should hire employees for their entire lives. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Job security is an illusion for both the employees and the employers. I will explain why I believe that businesses should not employ people for their entire life spans as follows.

The main argument in favor of hiring employees for their entire lives is to guarantee the companies that their investment in personnel resources will pay back. In that, employers have to reap the benefits of the amount of hours invested in training their employees. However, when employees are sure that they will never lose their jobs, they tend to work less efficiently. Staying in the comfort zone leads to a decrease in productivity, which in turn triggers off fewer profits for the companies.

Additionally, job security will lead to almost non-existent new positions in the company, because the costs of hiring new talents and maintaining them are enourmously expensive. This means that there will not be a continuous flow of new ideas, as current employees lose their freshness over a period of time. Consequently, the business will lose its dynamic.

Another reason for job stability is to assure employees that they will count on a steady source of income that will lead them to plan their future and family accordingly. However, as the years go by, the monotony of the work will let the employees want to change their jobs. Even if they are transferred to another section of the business, the policies and working conditions will remain more or less the same. What if they find a higher-paying job with outstanding benefits, but they are stuck with a lifetime contract? In order to leave their current company they will have to pay an exhorbitant penalty for breaking up the work relationship.

Therefore, as far as job security for life is concerned, the disadvantages outweight the advantages, for both the businesses and the employees. On the one hand, companies should retain an optimum level of experienced employees and hire fresh people. On the other hand, it is highly recommended that employees find new jobs from time to time, in order to broaden their horizons and change the work atmosphere.
