I've told the children

Dear teachers,
Is it right if I use “would have to” in this sentence:
“I’ve told the children that they would have to come home before ten on Saturday nights.”
Thanks.

Hi mlngvt,

You asked:

Yes, that’s fine. This is reported speech for: I said to the children: ‘You will have to come home …’

Alan

I agree. The sentence is correct. Will the sentence mean the same if you say this instead?

“I told the children that they have to come home before ten on Saturday nights.”

Dear teacher,
Thank you for your kind help.
I have some more sentences with the same meaning. Please tell me how different they are. Thanks again.

  1. I’ve told the children that they must come home before ten on Saturday nights.
  2. I’ve told the children that they had to come home before ten on Saturday nights.
  3. I’ve told the children that they have to come home before ten on Saturday nights.
