Is 'thereafter' correctly used

After the operation to remove the lump in my breast, I was bedridden for the next couple of days, and I only returned to school thereafter.

Is ‘thereafter’ correctly used? I would replace the word with “after I had been discharged from the hospital”. Is the amendment for the better?

I think ‘thereafter’ sounds way to formal here and would use ‘after that’ instead.
