Is the word 'food' redundant?

When he was five, he could only say “yes” and “no”, and needed others to feed him food.

Is the word ‘food’ redundant?

Thanks.

I would say not quite because you can also feed a person information.

In my opinion, … needed others to feed him would do because the age of the boy is five.(where feeding information, as Torsten says, may not apply)
Otherwise, needed others to spoon-feed him or needed others to give him food.
(So, I tend to say food is redundant in this context)
