International Mother Language Day (IMLD)?

Today is International Mother Language Day (IMLD) and I wonder why it reads ‘mother language’ rather than ‘native language’ or ‘mother tongue’. So, my question is if the following are acceptable collocations:

  • native language
  • mother tongue
  • mother language
  • native tongue

Since each refers to and signifies one’s own language, I think the collocations (though they are new combinations) would be acceptable.
