Internal combustion engine (ICE)

I don’t understand why the term ‘internal combustion engine’ is used so often when talking about the differences between cars with a diesel or petrol engine on the one hand and electric vehicles on the other. I mean, why does it have to always be ‘internal combustion engine’ when just ‘combustion engine’ is perfectly sufficient since all combustion engines produced nowadays are internal rather than external ones anyway?

Hi Torsten,
this might be owed the fact that these cars (diesel or petrol driven) produce or transform the energy in an internal engine inbuilt in the car, while the electric vehicles may use energie that also is produced or transformed by external combusting engines like coal fired power stations or gas firing ones and just the electrical energy is stored in batteries raher than being generated in windmills or solar power plants? At least to me this might be an explanation.
