intermittent quick breaks

Hi,
I confess, sometimes I couldn’t get what the natives mean even when all the words seem familiar. From a match report: “Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was looking a threat for Arsenal, who only named six substitutes because the Gunners did not realise Ryo Miyaichi was ineligible to play, as his intermittent quick breaks gave the visitors hope there was still a route back into the tie. “
“…because the Gunners did not realise Ryo Miyaichi was ineligible to play”—they didn’t realise… and hence they didn’t give him a nod (even as a substitute)?!..
“…as his intermittent quick breaks gave the visitors hope…”—how could it be possible with him not even on the bench?!..

Seems as if the author describes a different game…
Thank you.
