in a chair vs. on a chair

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

  1. My girl is sitting in a chair.
  2. My girl is sitting on an arm chair.
  3. My girl is standing on the lift.
  4. My girl is sitting in the coach.
  5. My girl is sitting in a ferry boat.

Thanks.

No joke, they make me mad.

  1. … in an armchair. You could use ‘on’ if she were sitting on the back or arms of the chair rather than in the seat. However, you would say ‘on a sofa’.
  2. … in the lift, unless she is standing on top of its ‘roof’.
  3. …on the coach is the usual preposition required, but ‘in’ is acceptable if you wish to emphasise where she is sitting.
  4. … on a ferry boat.

Thanks Coach.

  1. My girl is sitting in a chair. ( Is it correct? )

Some gurus say ‘My girl is sitting on a chair’ is correct ???

  1. …on the coach is the usual preposition required, but ‘in’ is acceptable if you wish to emphasise where she is sitting.<

6. My girl is sleeping in or on the coach?

I asked above questions since different gurus are saying different things.
Oh, dear.

Thanks.

‘… in a chair’ and '… on a chair’c can both be acceptable, but it depends largely on the design of the chair!

Personally I would tend to use “… in the coach” if the coach were stationary and “on the coach” if it were moving:

Where’s your girlfriend?
Oh, she didn’t get off with everyone else. She was tired so while we shop for souvenirs she is sleeping in the coach.

Would your girlfriend like a drink.
I’m not going to wake her to ask her. She wanted to sleep on the coach so that she would be refreshed for this afternoon’s visit.

Thank you very my Coach.

I got it.
