I was growing up middle-class

Hello everyone,

From the book Thank You for Being Late by Thomas Friedman.

Senator Al Franken talks:

I was growing up middle-class in America at the height of the middle class, back when being in the middle class meant real security. It meant you could put a roof over your family’s head and food on the table.

What is the meaning of “I was growing up middle-class”?

Thank you.

I suppose it means that the protagonist grew up as part/a member of the middle class.
