I used to be married vs I was married

Hi,

“I used to be married but I haven’t seen my wife for ages”. Right. Why not “I was married but I haven’t seen my wife for ages”?

Both tenses are acceptable. However, these sentences seem to imply that he is no longer married, in which case she is no longer his wife.
