Hello, Tuyet:

This is what my books tell me.

“Everyone but James was invited to the party.”

“Everyone was invited to the party but James.”

My books tell me that this is a shorter way to say:

“Everyone was invited to the party but that James was not invited.”

When you use a pronoun, the “correct” sentence would be:

“Everyone was invited to the party but that I was not invited.”

NEVERTHELESS in modern English, native speakers prefer the objective form because they consider “but” as a preposition.

Therefore:

Everyone but me was invited.
Everyone was invited but me.

James

I have already suggested the necessary revisions:

  1. Everyone______ Alan was invited to the party.
    C. ‘but’ is the only possible correct answer.
For two of the others to work, you would need to say:
    apart from
    except for
    and ‘though’ is simply incorrect.

The tests in this book are arranged__________
B is the correct answer, but note the spelling of ‘difficulty

Hello, Tuyet:

I thought that you would like to know that in American English, we are taught to use “that” (not “which”) for defining / restrictive clauses.

James
