What is the difference between the sentences?

The first sentence describes a scenario in which the author holds one of several lotteries.
The second sentence refers to a situation where there is a single lottery.

Definite vs indefinite article.

However people would always use the definite article for the lottery. “The lottery” almost always refers to all lotteries collectively. “The lottery” is used as a single thing.
