I have only spotted one mistake…‘I couldn’t believe THE lecturer assigned our group to do that research.’ Where is the other mistake? I’m curious.

It needs a period aska full stop.

So I spotted both mistakes. The 2nd one, I took it for granted!

Is this sentence grammatically correct?.. I had had a cup of coffee and afterwards I went shopping.

It is probably grammatically correct, but it is very unnatural and therefore quite useless.

So, how would this sentence sound more natural? I wish to keep the same tenses i.e. past perfect and past tense.

There is no need for the past perfect. If you want the sentence to be natural you need to get rid of the past perfect.

OK, so in order to sound natural you need to say: I had a cup of tea and then I went shopping.

Exactly. No need for the past perfect here.
