I am in the shop/at the shop buying some things/stuff.

Hi teachers,

Please correct the following sentences.

  1. I am in the shop/at the shop buying some things/stuff. ?

  2. I have to sit in the shop/at the shop today because my dad is going to another/other city. ?

Many thanks in advance.

“I am in/at the shop” – both possible. “in” means inside the building; “at” treats the shop as a location, and may be used whether you are inside or just outside.

“buying some things/stuff” – both possible. “stuff” in this sense is informal.

“I have to sit in the shop today” – possible, but in this context I would probably say “stay at the shop”
“I have to sit at the shop today” – doesn’t seem very natural to me

“going to another city” – OK
“going to other city” – wrong

Thank you very much, Sir Dozy - The same rule applies to the following sentence?

  1. He lives in another city.

Yes.

“He lives in another city” – correct
“He lives in other city” – wrong
