how to understand 'that' for the paragraph?

Hi,guys

I have some questions for the following paragraph. Please help me.

I want to analyze the term, that, according to the English grammar. Because I often get confused how to understand ‘that’ correctly. That would be adverb, relative pronoun, conjunction and others. There are so many ways to use it. I hope I could understand more about it from analyzing this paragraph.

  1. ‘Reality’ TV is such big business now [color=red]that 2003 will see at least 16 new shows on our television screens.

I think here that is a kind of conjection. It leads a adverb clause to express why reality TV is a big business now. Am I right?

2.What is it in the human psyche [color=red]that encourages this kind of voyeurism?

I think here that is a kind of pronoun. It represents what. Am I right?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I’d suggest the sentence = ‘Reality’ TV is such (a) big business/so big a business now that 2003 will see at least 16 new shows on our television screens.

So, it belongs to the ‘so…that’ or ‘such…that’ structure. (‘that’ introduces a consequence, close to ‘as a result’)

I think the sentence could be rewritten as:

What is it that/which encourages this kind of voyeurism in the human psyche?

So ‘that’ here refers to ‘it’.
