I am from China, and I have studied English for over 20 years. In my preparation for GMAT, I have been really bothered by the relatively low reading speed at which I can keep my comprehension with my reading.
I want to have some ideas how to speed up the reading while keeping the comprehension. What is the normal/average reading speed for an typical English native?
I?m not that native English speaker and I don?t know about the speed of them while reading the English. But what is your speed in reading Chinese and what does it depend on? Experience? Familarity?
Now, I just want to tell you my experience. When I joined at this site my experience in English was very little and always when I tried to read a post it was difficult to understand the context while I was fighting with vocabularies and grammar. So I decided to read and write as much as I can and must tell that now, although not perfect, but lots more improved and it?s much easier for me to comprehend what I read.
So your command of the English language seems to be really good and the task for you would be to practice it. And the site offers a good chance for that. So let me recommend you to take place in many discussions and I?m sure your speed of comprehension will increase soon.
Hmm. I think you, when saying “relatively low”, compared your speed not with natives, but rather with those foreigners (advanced in English) with whom you consider yourself being at about the same ‘bench’?…
I can only say that recently I’ve had Intermediate-level national (UK) exams, in particulary in Reading, that required comprehensive (,‘critical’, analytical) reading of 8 two-thirds-page size texts (10-12 pt) and answering 40 various questions (5 for each text).
For an hour.
For me, personally, Level 1 Reading test has taken about 40-45 min, Level 2 test – exactly an hour.
How to speed up… as for me – permanent (two-three hours a week) practice in a small group (reading aloud + explaining the meaning) was (and is) the best way…
Thank you for your advice. I am sure I will come here as often as possible to practise my writing and reading skills.
Currently I have two very clear objects: get a nice score for GMAT and another nice one for TOEFL, which are required for my MBA program in USA/UK. I want to improve reading skills in wake of the tough workload in the forthcoming MBA study.
In light of this, what I am really concerned with is the reading effectiveness of a MBA student. I do not want to be left behind too much or have to input too much exstra time to make up for the reading inefficiency.
You have to start the acceleration of your reading speed by continuous practicing. You reading speed will gradually increase and There will be no problem for getting the comprehensions. So try to practice regularly to improve your reading speed.
