How to remember so many verb phrases?

Hello, everybody! I’m a Senior 3 student in China. I find in my study that the verb phrases are the most difficult part because each one may have so many different meanings that they usually have nothing in common at all, and what’s more, there are tons of verbs in every language, what should I do? To memorize them one by one?
I know you may say an environment of English is quite helpful, but you know it’s impossible here, so do you have any more practical suggestions?

Many thanks,
Lee Chen

Dear Chen (I take it this is your first name?),

One of the good things of the English language is that one word usually has various meanings - so having learned one word you can express different ideas. However, you have to learn those words always in a context, for example ‘take lunch’, ‘take over a company’, ‘take a decision’ and so on.
You seem to have access to the internet so visit our forum often and you are bound to pick up a lot of new useful phrases. Where exactly in China are you from? Is your mother tongue Mandarin?[YSaerTTEW443543]

Nihao Lee Chen, I am from China too and if I am right, we are from the same province, Anhui, aren’t we? I’ve been to the Great Mountain Huangshan before, because my cousin works in SuoDao hotel in TunXi.

Good Morning Mr. Torsten,

I have also facing problem with phrases as i don’t use frequently that’s why when we hear such we become in amazing situation. And sometimes we also get confused by that as I heard we say “Power went off” when there is a power gone but we not say “Power has come” when it comes.
