What would you say is the percentage of native speakers who know the German expression ‘Achtung!’? I’m asking because I’ve just read the following headline in Forbes magazine:
Achtung! Future Midsize Volkswagen Pickup Built With Ford’s Help Won’t Be Sold In The U.S.
I knew what it meant. I was going to say the percentage was pretty high, but my wife did not know. I must say I only know because of all the WWII tv shows and movies I watched as a kid. The Nazi bad guy would always say Achtung, Yah, and Nein, although the rest of his dialogue would be in German accented English!
It should be a popular one, around 60%
