Hi Hayden,
Let’s start with YOU instead of ‘u’. I think the question you want to ask could go like this:
How long ago did you return or simply When did you return and how long do you plan/are you planning to stay here?
Alan
PS I see in the heading of your message that you could also mean: How long have you come back for?
Hi Alan,
I am very glad to have your direction. The situation i really want to question started like this:
A friend who moved to the US 7years ago,she is now working and living back in Vietnam. One day they hang out, there is a new friend make conversation to her. After knowing she lived in the US for 7years,he continuous to ask her “how long have you come back?”.She answer “7years” and the man repeated the question 3times and have the same answers.
After that, the argument started. One of my friend bring this situation to ask me and says that the man ask this question with meaning “i already know you lived in America for 7years.So when did you return and how long do you plan to stay here?”
I am not really confidence with the Grammar part. But in my opinion i thought there is something wrong with the question,i just don’t know what is it.So i tell my friend in this case i will ask “how long have you been back?” or “how long have you stayed here?” (and as your direction “how long ago did you return” or “when did you return”).And the meaning part “how long do you plan to stay here?” is a different question. You can not include it in that question(how long have you come back).Am i right?
How about “how long have you come back for?”.Is it the right question for this case?
Thank you very much
Hayden
Hi Hayden
I agree that “How long have you been back?” would be a good way to ask the question.
It’s also possible to say these, for example:
“When did you return?”
“When did you get back?”
“How long ago did you get/come back?”
“How long ago did you get/come back from the USA?”
.
Hi Amy
Thank you very much
Hayden
