How far? vs How far away?

Hi teachers,
What’s the difference, if any, between these two questions? Is it optional to use ‘away’ in the question, or is it odd?
a) How far from the town was the road that Peter found? Five miles.
b) How far away from the town was the road that Peter found? Five miles.
