How can this kind of trip be called?

Hi,
A group of students did a research on how badly factories affect the environment. They went on a trip to some industrial parks to see for themselves how the condition there is and also to interview people who live in those areas, so how can that kind of trip be called?

I would probably call it a “field trip”. But someone else may have a better term!
