Help me about structure: "Would have + p.p"

Dear guys,

I don’t understand why "would have + past participle " is used in this sentence:
“Although the tasks we handled were not as varied as you would have liked,…”?

If I can say:
“Although the tasks we handled were not as varied as you liked,…”?

Please help me to clear it.
Thank a lot.

(1) [color=red]“Although the tasks we handled were not as varied as you would have liked [color=indigo](if you had been in charge and decided which tasks - varied or monotonous - we were to handle.”

(2) [color=red]"Although the tasks we handled were not as varied as you liked [color=indigo]them to be in your job handling tasks…"

It is important to take context into account in order to understand grammar and syntax.

What contexts did you have in mind, so we can be more specific? Complete the sentences in your own words.

Thank you guys very much for your response. I’ve understood this situation.
Have a nice day!
