It means that the person you refer to as “you” does exactly the same as you and he did in your first sentence.

I hope this makes some sense.

I can’t see the need for a new sentence after ‘smiled back. Simply follow ‘as you do’ after a comma. The ‘you’ is used impersonally. The expression ‘as you do’ here is similar to ‘this is what people would usually do in those circumstances’.
