Had rather + bare infinitive

I recently came across the following sentence in “A concise English Grammar for Foreign Students” by C.E.Eckesley

I had rather starve than beg.
 1. Is it equal to “would rather” or would sooner?
 2. Is it archaic or is used in Modern English?
 1. Yes (both).

 2. It is old-fashioned and may look like an error to modern speakers.
