Dear my Teachers, Mr Alan and Mr Torsten,
I began at the end because I never heard about a Catherine wheel, and my name in Hungarian: Katalin, in English Cathrine. From now on I know the Catherine wheel a type of firework than spin when lit. If it works I’ll try to send a photo about it at the end of my letter.
I deal with this essay in such a way that I separate the sayings or proverbs according to they exist word for word in Hungarian or it exists but only the meaning ; and there is two which don’t have Hungarian equivalent.
One: “They will never set the Thames on fire”- I understand its meaning: Who does never something remarkable. If I find its Hungarian equivalent I’ll write you.
The other." -getting on like a house a fire"- for me this saying is little morbid, because I saw flaming house, it’s terrible. But I accept Alan’s explanation about its origin.
Those which are word for word the same:
-play with fire:we use mostly when for exp. I criticize somebody who doesn’t stand critic but I do it in spite of this, others say me: don’t play with fire.
-adding fuel to the fire: if there is a quarrel and you pile it on; we say this.
-under fire:being criticized severely; for exp: the Government
-burning question: very important, urgent question
-Burning the candle at both ends. Who doesn’t care about her/his health, overdoes everything:drinking alcohol, smoking, taking of drugs etc. or exhaust oneself by trying to do too many things.
Have several irons in the fire: Who has many undertaking at the same time.
In Hungarian these saying exists but with an other drafting.
Jumping out the frying pan into the fire: from a bad situation to one that is worse. This is in Hungarian a doublet where the two words rhymes with each other.
“-burn the midnight oil” study or work until late at night. This saying can derive from the time when there was no electricity.
-old flame person with whom one was once in love; sweetheart or lover.
-fired with enthusiasm:excited, agitated because of preparation.
-"shot down in flames"- kill somebody in flames.
-get the finger burnt “end up losing money” as a result of foolish behaviour.
-"-sparkler": type of small handheld firework that sends of shavers of sparks. In Hungary at Christmas evening we switch off the light and we switch on Christmas tree light and we light some sparklers and sing carols.
I didn’t write about Guy Fawkes but I send a song.
Best regards:
