Grateful and Thankful usage

If I have got hike (salary hike), should I say to the Manager - I am grateful to you.
I heard that “Grateful to you” should be used only for humans.

I heard that, “thankful” should be used to refer to God/Goddess only. Is this true?

Thanks!

You can say “Thank you very much for giving me a pay raise.” or “I’m very grateful to you for raising my salary”.

As for the difference between ‘grateful’ and ‘thankful’ please read this explanation by Alan:

Grateful refers to self. It’s how you feel. It’s internal.

Thankful is more directed toward the other person. You are still the one who “feels”, but it specifically gives credit to the other person. It’s an acknowledgement of the role they played that caused you to feel this way.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

But is it correct to use “more directed toward” - Is it not “towards” ?
