Go for vs go on: which one is right?

Hello,

I have a question on usage of “go”.

Almost half our income is spent on child care.

You can paraphrase this sentence like these:

(1) Almost half our income goes for rent.
(2) Almost half our income goes on rent.

Someone insists (1) is right; the other says (2) is right. What do you think? Which one is right? Or, is there a difference between them because of nationality like American English vs British one?

Thank you in advance,
sweetpumpkin

Here in the US, only the first sentence would be correct. Money “goes for” or “goes toward” {“goes towards” in the UK I think} something or is “spent on” something.

I agree with Luschen. But I’d advise you to use any of the following if you’re in the Asian region.

Almost half our income goes to rent account.
Almost half our income goes out as rent payment.
Almost half our income is spent on rent.

The answer must be (1).

Almost half our income goes for rent.
