Hi Joe,

Yes I have heard about Gmail - there is quite a lot of talk on it on appropriate forums and you are the first person I can ask to relate their personal experience with Google’s latest feature.

TOEIC listening, question-response: Have you ever been scuba diving?[YSaerTTEW443543]

Hai Torsen,
I do not know when google will be made public… Meanwhile if you wish I will send you invitaiton form gmail ( as soon as google gives me)…

Joe.

Dear Joe,

Many thanks for offering me a Gmail invitation - that’s very kind of you.
Incidentally, I had the opportunity to open a Gmail account yesterday because I received an invitation from Mark Carey of markcarey.com
I must admit Gmail is much more advanced than any other free web based email service such as Hotmail, Yahoo Mail or MSN. I’m sure over a certain period of time Google will lead the field in this area of web services just as they are number one in Internet search and online advertising.
What do you think of Gmail?
Regards
Torsten

PS: Please, check the word hai - it doesn’t exist in the English language but in some European languages it means shark. I hope you don’t consider me a shark :)[YSaerTTEW443543]

TOEIC listening, question-response: What’s the difference between Roxwell’s supermarket and Driscoll’s?[YSaerTTEW443543]

Hi Torsten,
Thanks for correcting me.
Google is good technology company. which invests more in new technology. It has very young CEO who thinks big. Microsoft was intrested to buy google since 1998, but google was the one which broke the deal as they already had the vision clearly what would be google in 2004.
But when Microsoft enters into the search market, by hook or by crook Microsoft will play to win. Google must play well not to be next Netscape,Borland, Sun…

Joe.

Hi Joe,

I agree with you - Microsoft has a lot of corporate muscle and yes, they have been trying to compete with Google ever since Google went online.
As you rightly said, a lot can change in the Internet based search market - rumour has it that Microsoft is launching their search engine in November this year - they have been indexing web pages more extensively than Google for the last 3 months or so.
However, Google’s approach to business is different from their competitors’. They have the vision and purpose to make the Internet a democratic medium providing small companies and organizations such as english-test.net with the same business opportunities like the fat cats and as far as I can see they have been very successful with this policy.[YSaerTTEW443543]

TOEIC listening, question-response: How should we pay for the shipment?[YSaerTTEW443543]

Dear Torsten,
Yes we should be gratefull to google for its innovation in providing with fair fields to fight with big corporates. Have you ever searched for “Best Search Engine” or " “search engine” in google? The results will speak the rest…

But Torsten don’t you think looking into human side of business is also a business. In business we are either predator or prey. I think down the road google to retain its market share will do excatly what Mr. Microsoft did.
Meanwhile It is because of Microsoft and Intel , nearly everyone has PC in home…

Joe.

Dear Joe,

It is very good that you express your opinion and thoughts here on the forum.
Learning English must have a purpose: to understand better what is happening around us and of course Google and MSN are part of our environment.

You made an interesting statement:

Yes, business is about competition, it is about developing new products and services and marketing them. But any type of business is also about people. Your customers and users decide whether you are a good company or not. Why do you think Google has been able to take the lead in the search industry when companies like Microsoft and Yahoo and had been in business for years? Because the Google founders had observed and scrutinized the way people look for information and they came up with a solution that was better than what Microsoft and Yahoo had to offer.

As far as I can see Google not only has the better technology - they also have a better human resources policy. Think about it: Google has managed to become household brand (or even more than that) within a very short period of time almost without spending any money on advertising. How did that happen? Word of mouth or viral marketing as the online version is called. Google has created more than 1000 jobs within a very short period of time and those are not just jobs. I bet that any of those 1000 or so employees are proud to be working for/with/at Google. Do you think the same holds true for other companies?
It would be great if we could continue this conversation. Waiting for your response.

Torsten

Dear Torsten,
I am grateful to you for correcting ‘grateful’.

Yes. Google has handful of employees and doing great task. I personally feel small teams can do great magic than big teams. Comming to human resource policy , google took some key Microsoft employess for its GBrowser. Don’t you think this is exactly what microsoft did by taking key players from Borland( Both are in same boat now). This is what is called business decision than ethical one.

So ,in my opinion google may seem to be good company now, but we have to wait and see will it continue to be…

Joe.

Hello Joe,

How are things today over there in Chennai? You raised an interesting point regarding ethics in business. So, now there are former Microsoft engineers working with Google. What exactly is unethical about this? I guess those programmers had the choice between staying with Microsoft or taking on a job with a new company.

I think those employees accepted an offer from Google. Nobody forced them to do anything. You will find that in many industries such as car production there is quite a high fluctuation rate among the personnel, especially at the executive level.

You can check the professional records of any manager you will see that most of them have had worked at several companies in the same industry. I can’t see anything wrong with that.

Take a look at professional football or baseball teams. How many of the trainers, managers and players change their place of work? In the modern world you are very likely to change companies a couple of times throughout your professional career. So, you too have to take business decisions which doesn’t mean you are an unethical person, does it?
Let me know what you think.

Regards
Torsten[YSaerTTEW443543]

TOEIC listening, talks: Radio commercial for an invisible dog fencing system[YSaerTTEW443543]

Dear Torsten,
Torsten , according to me all are fair in business. What I wanted to communicate is,when microsoft took key persons who developed delphi from Borland for development of DotNet,people from all sides spoke ill of microsoft. When Internet Explorer was given free, people were harsh at microsoft but the same people praise when linux was given for free dreaming to kill Microsoft.
So when you compared google with yahoo and microsoft saying the former is more human centric and later isn’t ,I just wanted to say Microsoft(or Yahoo) is also so good as google.

Joe.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for clarifying - now I can see your point. I absolutely agree with you - it takes a lot of business savvy and determination to build a company the size of Microsoft or Yahoo. I simply wanted to underline the fact that Sergey Brin and Larry Page have managed to come up with a unique business system that can compete in many areas with existing companies. I have recently read an article about Google’s intention to enter the web hosting market and for a number of reasons their chances to succeed in this field are very good.
At any rate Google will be dominating several categories of Internet business for another couple of years.[YSaerTTEW443543]

Thanks that we are living in this age of internet. We could learn anything we want??. I can study in stanford university just by typing www.stanford.edu
One thing is sure, as Corporates fight with each other and starts to increase the quality, it is the customer ( we people) who are benefited.

Joe.

Have you noticed that Gmail Google Docs now allows you to upload any types of files? That’s absolutely amazing! You now can store all your documents and files online! (I know exactly what’s coming from many of you now :-)).[YSaerTTEW443543]

Hi Torsten,

This discussion is resurrected after 5 years :-). How are you Torsten?

Regarding the uploading feature, yes, it is a really good feature from Google.

But after we published a document, how to we delete it from the web. I guess, one workaround as of now is to delete full contents of the document and republish it.

Also, I am now polishing my article/essay writing skills and I am finding this site a great help. I thank you guys.

Joe.
