Do you find the following sentence correct and natural? spoken by a teacher for her student

Your sentence is OK. My assumption is that your sentence is spoken by a teacher to the parent of a student (i.e. not to the student directly). If that’s the case, you might also use one of these, for example:

  • He has a lot of potential, but he doesn’t take his studies seriously (enough).
  • Although he has a lot of potential, his attitude towards his studies is having a negative effect on his progress/learning.

This is very natural, grammatical, oft-repeated sentence in English.
