Even if you don’t ... (ellipsis)

So, students and pastors should be encouraged. There are good reasons to think you can retain your knowledge of the languages, if your role as “minister of the Word” is properly understood. But, even if you don’t, many of the benefits still remain.

Does “even if you don’t” mean “even if you don’t retain your knowledge of the languages” in the above passage?

I don’t think so because then the sentence should read 'But, even if you can’t" so I think the sentence means “But, even you don’t think you can retain your knowledge…”
