Do native speakers know and use the term 'Hinterland'?

In a Bloomberg documentary I’ve just heard the presenter use the word ‘Hinterland’ which actually is a German word. So, do native speakers know it?

Yes, I know it and use it. Other similar, yet more informal terms are “the sticks” and “BFE” (bum fu¢$ Egypt). I admit I never quite understood that second one!
