I think we can use the past continuous perfect in this sentence because it’s mean emphasizes on the continuity of action ‘never won’. Do you think so? if not, pleased to give me a explanation.
Both of those forms are less commonly used now, but you have the right idea. Notice further, however, that past perfect continuous, like the past continuous, is used to create a background action within which another action occured.
‘We had been dancing for an hour when my wife arrived’.
This other action is all but mandatory, either stated or implied, if the continuous form is to be used.
