difference between stop and halt

hi
what is the different between stop & halt?
thx.

In contexts where you can use ‘halt’, you can also use ‘stop’ with no difference in meaning.

For example:
She came to a halt in mid-sentence.
She came to a stop in mid-sentence.

However, ‘stop’ has other definitions which means that sometimes you cannot use ‘halt’ instead of ‘stop’.
For example.

I’m too tired to do any more work this evening so I’m going to stop now. – ‘Halt’ would sound strange in this sentence.

Hi!
Will you please to say if there is another way to say “they run their own survey comany”. I mean what I can say instead of “run”. And one more question: what does “stand for” mean?
Thank you
Lara

They own their own company.
They manage their own company.

stand for something [no passive]
1 (not used in the progressive tenses) to be an abbreviation or symbol of something
‘The book’s by T.C. Smith.’ ‘What does the ‘T.C.’ stand for?’
2 to support something
I hated the organization and all it stood for (= the ideas that it supported).
3 not stand for something to not let somebody do something or something happen
I’m not standing for it any longer.
