When I looked the word [i]launch[/i] up in the dictionary, it is used mainly

with ships, rockets and satellites. I have not seen this word used with planes.
In fact, can the verb launch be used with planes?

I believe you should look at it at a different angle: ‘launch’ is a transitive verb ie you can only launch smth (a satellite\plane\ship\project,.), whereas a plane\bus\ train can depart\ …
