deluged by vs. deluged with

Will you tell me which of the following sentences is preferred?

We were deluged with inquiries.
We were deluged by inquiries.

Thanks again!

We received a deluge of inquiries.

You do see both, but I prefer “deluged with”.

How come there’s a difference of opinion between Bev and Dozy on the subject?
I take it the two of you are native speakers of BrE, right?

There’s no difference of opinion, just a difference of preference.
