Dear friends, I'm a greenhand and I'm very thankful for your help.

the topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Watching television is bad for children.

Nowadays, it has become a trend for children to watch television for entertainment. People are having differing ideas about that effect the television would lay on children. Personally, I think watching television has a detrimental influence on them. I hold this view for the following reasons:

Firstly, watching television excessively can do harm to children’s hearth directly. The reasons are two folded: for one thing, watching television replaces the traditional status of outdoor activities, thus deprive the children of the opportunities to exercise. For another, spending an inordinate amount of time before a television would affect the eyesight of children adversely. What’s more, staying still before the electronic box for a long time may develop potential diseases such as obesity.

Secondly, watching television can affect children’s academic performances. not only does the time of watching television conflict with that of doing homework, but it also take up much of the children’s energy which can lead to the children dozing off in class the next day. According to a survey published in China Daily, the majority of the top students watch little television, spending an average time of less than 3 hours on television per week, while failures in academic fields are mostly heavy watchers with an average time of up to 45 hours per week.

Last but not least, watching television from a early age may influence children’s values and mind inevitably. Children are exposed by television to a dreamful world which never exists in the reality. But little children lacks the experience and ability to tell the lies from the truth. Also, television tends to confuse merits and demerits. That is to say, human virtues are seldom emphasizes while violence, smoking and cursing are exaggerated. Again, little children fail to recognize. Obviously the evil appeals to them more. To make matters worse, the children are inclined to copy the heroes and heroines who have won their favors. Consequently, watching television from early age may result in serious problems when they deal with complex tasks and interacting with each other later in their life.

All in all, I’m strongly against children watching television. They should be strictly regulated for the amount of time spent on it.
