Could we use 'situation': In the meantime you can tell me something about...?

From Getting to know each other:

…If you like I can tell you more about this wonderful event. In the meantime you can tell me something about your situation. Are you from a small town or a large city?..

Isn’t it awkward to say ‘tell me something about your situation’? Shoudn’t it be just ‘tell me something about you’?

I’d probably just say " In the meantime, you can tell me something about yourself."

Situation sounds like the person being spoken to is in some kind of dilemma or problem.

Agreed.
