correct use of word overseas/abroad

Hello there

Could you use the word abroad/overseas for neighboring countries or does that sound unnatural.

For example, could someone living in France who decides to go and live/work in Germany say the following:

’ I am going to live/work abroad/overseas (Germany)’

Is the above correct or not ?

If the same person plans to go to Australia/USA says

’ I’m going to live/work overseas/abroad.’

To me that sounds natural.(to reach both countries you need to cross the sea).

Thanks in advance,

Hi mdenglish

“Abroad” is generally for crossing a mainland border; i.e. France to Germany.

And you stated correctly that “overseas” requires well water between the countries
