Core curriculum. Integrated

Good afternoon! This is another integrated. The task is in Kaplan book

Summarize the problems with the core curriculum discussed in the lecture, and then explain the advantages to fixing these problems using points from the reading.

The main problems, discussed in the lecture, are disadvantages of the core curriculum. The core curriculum is an educational system, providing students with wide knowledge from different areas. According to the speaker, some disciplines should be changed or even removed.

First of all, the lecturer says that, according to the recent research, some disciplines are too easy and irrelevant for some students. As we know from the reading, this educational system contains a variety of subjects, including basic skills and different sciences. Some students might be already familiar with them.

Another problem is that many disciplines are too complex and classes are too big. For example, the writing course might become easier, whereas some more creative subjects could be added. As the reading states, all the students have the same list of required subjects. From this point of view, this list may become more interesting. Moreover, summer programs and different out-college activities might be added.

In conclusion, the listening passage makes two suggestions in solving some problems of core curriculum, including elimination of easy subjects and making them elective, and simplification of too complex ones.
