Choose one word whose undlined part is pronounced differently

  1. car
  2. market
  3. apartment
  4. garden

Please help me to do this exercise!

apartment

I would say they all have the same sound when spoken.

Thank you Kitosdad and Haidera. I also think same Kitosdad. But it is the exercise my younger brother’s teacher gave him.

There is a very subtle difference, but the ‘a’ in car is a slightly shorter sound. It’s tough for a native English speaker to hear, (the only reason I know is from some professional phonics courses which I have followed) so this exercise seems particularly challenging for a non native speaker.

Can’t speak for all non-native speakers, but for me this task seems daunting, if not next to impossible.
I’m having trouble distinguishing between “pit” and “peat” or “color” and “collar”, let alone that subtlety.

Hi OTS,

I can do you ‘pit’ and ‘peat’ and ‘colour’ and ‘collar’ any day of the week but I’m blowed if I can differentiate these:

  1. car
  2. market
  3. apartment
  4. garden
