choose from between

Hi,
“It’s a huge win for United. There was little to choose from between the two sides.”
–If there’s little to choose between two sides, they are equal (in squads/strength/performance etc.) Does the added ‘from’ not make it sound as if there was nothing worthy to choose from really)? Commentators to blame again or just me?..

The addition of ‘from’ does not indicate there was nothing worthy to me.

Was it that necessary then (a matter of choice)?

It’s optional though I would also have used ‘from’ in that particular context. I think the majority would.
