Children’s leisure time should be more educational or not?

There is an increasing concern about whether children should spend their spare time engaging in educational activities. Some parents argue that children should be taught all the time, while opponents claim that school age children have been deprived of happiness as well as childhood due to excessive stresses. Personally, I am in favor of the latter viewpoint.

Parents who oppose to intervene children’s free time contend that the action like this will create a series of negative impacts even severe problems on children’s growth. First of all, children need a wide range of knowledge and skills that cannot be provided by regular classes or textbooks. For instance, by participating group activities such as football game, children will have access to co-operate with others, thereby cultivating their awareness of friendship and responsibility. Secondly, schooling usually asks students for accomplish considerable number of assignments, which has occupied the major part of their time. Therefore, essential leisure time can give children motivation to do things what they are really interested in. Furthermore, doing those so-called meaningless things such as drawing casually on a blank paper is actually a process of innovation for children. In this regard, parents have a duty to motivate the action like this rather than restrict them.

By contrast, others maintain that children cannot reach the point of self-control so that they have to act under parents’ guidance. That is to say, if they give free rein to children, they would in all likelihood ideal the time away in playing games. This viewpoint may partially true. However, the constraint indeed accompanies with potential challenges. For example, requiring children to conduct educational things, especially the extension of their assignments would probably push them involved into rote learning, which further extinguish their creativities and exert needless pressure on them.

In summary, I would concede that parents can afford children general directions in terms of how should they arrange their spare time. Nevertheless, no one can prevent children from enjoyments in excuse of education. Overall, I am convinced that parents should grant plenty of free time for children and left them fantastic childhood memories.

Thanks for modification.
