car "gets great mileage"?

Hi guys,

please what does it mean when car “gets great mileage”?

Example: VW’s new diesel-powered hybrid gets great mileage - better than Toyota’s top-selling hybrid. Its price-tag is another story.

My guess is it means that the car has great lifetime / that the driver is going to be ale to ride this car for a long time.

thank in advance guys.

cheers

It is an idiomatic phrase that refers to the fuel efficiency. If it were more precise, it would be, “This car can go a great distance from burning one liter (British “litre”) of gasoline (British “petrol”).”

please what does it mean when car “gets great mileage”?

It travels further than similar engine capacity cars per gallon/litre of petrol/fuel.

Aha!..
Perfect, thank you guys for help!
