...by the time mommy got back or...by the time mommy gets back... puzzling

Hi everyone,

I heard Barbarba Carrerra saying this in ‘Wicked Stepmother’:

  • I could have this room redecorated by the time mommy got back.

Does the following sentence have the same meaning?

  • I could have this room redecorated by the time mommy is back?

Which one of them is the more natural?

Thanks
Alexandro

I think the context’s needed. Anyhow I can’t get her.
