began to break

Hi

The question asks which one of the following sentences is wrong:

  1. The night began to break.
  2. Morning began to break.
  3. The day began to dawn.
  4. It began to dawn.

For me all of them sound wrong. Please help.

Kumiko

‘Break’ when used of dawn or day means ‘begin with the sun rising’
Dawn was just breaking as they drove into the town.
The day began to break, heralded by the sound of birdsong.

However, the term is not used of night.

Hi Kumiko,

When you want to say that night is coming, the verb used is ‘fall’. We say: Night is falling.

Hi Alan, Beeesneees

So No. 1 is the wrong sentence.

Thank you always.
