because the lift didn't work

Are these sentences correct?

[color=red]1) I hope you were not inconvenienced because the lift didn’t work.

[color=indigo]2) I hope you weren’t scared because the neighbours made a lot of noise.

Gratefully,
Navi.

Yes, Navi, they’re okay. Did you have a question about them?

Thank you very much, Beeesneees,

I just wanted to see if they are correct or not. The question has been answered. But I did manage to come up with a follow-up question in the meantime.

Could ‘because’ be replaced by ‘that’ in those sentences?

[color=red]1a) I hope you were not inconvenienced that the lift didn’t work.

[color=indigo]2a) I hope you weren’t scared that the neighbours made a lot of noise.

I think ‘1a’ works, but ‘2a’ sounds a bit strange to me.

Gratefully,
Navi.

I’m afraid not. I’d rather suggest:

That the lift didn’t work, I hope, did not inconvenience you.

That the neighbours made a lot of noise, I hope, didn’t scare you.

Hi Navi,

I think ‘that’ can easily and correctly replace ‘because’ in both your sentences, though with 2a, as you have suggested, the nuance changes slightly. The meaning is the same though and an English native speaker would accept them both equally.

I think using ‘that’ to replace ‘because’ is stretching it a bit in 2a. For me using ‘that’ with verbs like ‘scared’ ‘worried’ ‘frightened’ and so on suggests a subjunctive with the idea of 'for fear that’and points towards a future possibility. In other words - scared that the neighbours might/ we’re going to make a noise.

In 1a ‘that’ works all right meaning ‘by the fact/for the reason that’
