at a loose end

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

When Major John Hewson retired from the army at the age of fifty, he soon found himself at a loose end.

at a loose end = without certain work

Thanks for your efforts

I thought the idiom was ‘at loose ends’, but the meaning is the same: with idle time on one’s hands.
