Article preceeding town names

It is clear that we say
the town of Ambleton (definite article) and
Ambleton (zero article).

I am also inclined to believe that no article is necessary before the phrase Ambleton town. Am I right?

You’re right. No article would be necessary before the phrase “Ambletion town”, but we would probably use that phrase only in a poem or an old folk song.
