I face this sentence in Longman Dictionary. Is it a right sentence:
Over the next months, he applied himself to improving the technique.
Over the next month: indicated future tense.
he applied?!?!?
I think it should be he will apply or he is going to apply.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

The tense you need depends on the starting point. If you mean from now, you would use a future form - Over the next few/following months he will apply …On the other hand if you mean from a starting point in the past, you would say - Over the next few/following months he applied …
